Swapo Secretary General Sophia Shaningwa on Saturday said she knows without a doubt that the hope of the nation is on the party to address all social issues Namibia faces.

Shaningwa made these remarks on Saturday during the Swapo Party think tank workshop.

She said this year is packed with important activities for Swapo, including the party’s seventh ordinary congress and prior to that, the national policy conference. She added that the research papers produced by the think tank will constitute the backbone of discussions of the policy conference, and the outcomes of the policy conference will become prominent discussion points and ultimately produce the congress resolutions.

‘I would therefore like to urge all participants at this workshop to critically analyse issues and provide valuable input that enriches our output to our congress. We are doing this task with a vision anchored on our responsibility to provide correct advice to our party leadership that is necessary to carve the architecture by which to cushion, nurture and govern our society,’ said Shaningwa.

She added that the think tank is the eyes and ears of the party which brings issues to the attention of the party leadership, because even though Swapo is the ruling party, it rules within the context of a multi-party system. This implies that the party manifesto as cascaded into government policies and development agendas is not solely implemented by the party cadres, but by everyone including non-members, hence due to the principle of accountability, the party accepts all criticism from people where promises in the manifesto have not been delivered accordingly.

‘In this regard, the Swapo party think tank has an immense responsibility to take stock of all resolutions passed by the congress and important conferences such as the introspection conference and exhume the realities how and why some of these resolutions have not been implemented. Swapo has a track record of good performance dating back to the time of the national liberation struggle, in terms of governance and national cohesion,’ stated Shaningwa.
