Namibia is among several Sub-Saharan African countries to which Huawei has provided mining services to accelerate mining digital transformation.

Mining services in Namibia are provided at the Rössing Uranium Mine in Arandis and Namibia De Beers Diamond Mine in Oranjemund through equipment such as drilling rigs, excavators and heavy trucks, among others.

Other countries include South Africa, Botswana, Zambia and Ghana.

During the just-ended Mobile World Congress (MWC) which took place in Barcelona, Spain, Huawei Vice President for the Sub-Saharan Region, Liao Yong, said Huawei will continue to collaborate and work with more African countries to promote digital smart mining.

“Mining in this region is the economic backbone and continues to play a role in the economy of Africa as a whole. It is therefore crucial to accelerate and improve digital mining in order to create more value in Africa,” Yong noted.

The company has also recently collaborated on the world‘s first 5G-oriented Smart Mining Diamond Mine Project with Botswana-based mine Debswana at its Jwaneng open-pit.

The collaboration enables the provision of stable 5G features such as high bandwith and low latency, which can support the application of cutting-edge technologies like automous driving, enable more intelligent digital transformation of the mine’s future.

Botswana’s Minister of Communication, Knowledge and Technlogy, Thulagano Segokgo commended the collaboration between Huawei and Debswana, noting that these are efforts that are driving digital transformation in the mining industry not only in Botswana, but in Africa as a whole.

“By working with Huawei, African mines can take the ef?ciency, productivity and safety of mining to the next level,” he said.

According to the mine’s Head of Information Management, Molemisi Sechaba, at the same event, the previous 5G eLTE had limitations such as low coverage, the use of public wireless frequencies and less robust anti-interference capabilities.

Chief Technology Of?cer of Huawei Mining Companies, Xu Jun, said Huawei is committed to using strengths in information and communication technologies like 5G, cloud and artificial intelligence to develop smart mining solutions that are based on an industrial internet architecture for customers in the mining industry.

African mining companies have been urged to adopt the smart mining solutions as it is more efficient, safer and intelligent.
