The newly elected Chairperson of the Erongo Regional Council, Benitha Imbamba, has vowed to work closely with her team in order to serve the region to the best of her abilities.

Imbamba made these remarks during her acceptance speech on Monday after she was elected and sworn in as the new chairperson, a position which has been vacant since April following the resignation of former Independent Patriots for Change (IPC) councillor Ciske Howard-Smith.

The councillor for the Arandis Constituency and Swapo party member warned against the formation of groups within institutions, noting that it is dangerous as it hampers development.

“As elected leaders, we need to deliver services to our people as a team. Yes, we come from different political parties but in the Council Chambers, we are one and it is all about the communities we serve,” she said.

Imbamba reminded fellow members in the regional council to always keep the promises made to the communities which voted for them into power, emphasising that they should not let government efforts through resources be in vain.

Omaruru Constituency Councillor Ernst Wetha, who is also a member of Swapo and who replaced Imbamba as a member of the Management Committee, concurred with the chairperson’s sentiments, stressing that in order to deliver good quality services to the people, political differences should be put aside.

“This is a new dawn in the history of Erongo Region so we do not want to dwell on the past, we are focusing on the future and we will ensure that we have council meetings as per the constitution and the citizens will be catered to through these meetings,” he noted.

Another member of the ERC Management Committee, Walvis Bay Rural Constituency councillor Florian Donatus who is a member of the IPC, expressed relief that a new chairperson has finally been elected, stressing that the regional council is behind schedule with many activities due to a lack of council meetings.

“It is good that we have a full composition of the management committee now and we look forward to the leadership of the new chairperson management, who will ensure that past failures by the ERC will come to an end,” Donatus said.
