Opuwo: Opuwo Mayor, Kasipo Kakondo, has said infrastructure development, housing expansion and investment promotion will anchor the town's growth strategy in the coming years. Kakondo told Nampa on Wednesday the council is prioritising improved water supply, the formalisation of informal settlements and the creation of investment opportunities to strengthen service delivery and create jobs.According to Namibia Press Agency, the council is focusing on several key areas, including water infrastructure, housing development, road construction, renewable energy initiatives, and sanitation improvements. These efforts aim to meet the needs of Opuwo's growing population. Kakondo outlined ongoing and planned major projects, such as constructing a water treatment plant and upgrading internal water networks in Otuzemba VIP and Orutjandja North to enhance access to clean and reliable water.A wastewater treatment plant is also on the agenda to bolster sanitation services, and repairs to the Power Save Road are underwa y to improve mobility within the town. Housing and land servicing are top priorities, with several areas designated for formalisation and plot development. Orutjandja North is expected to provide 1,000 plots, Katutura 500 plots, Okatuuo 200 plots, along with a 500-plot reception area under development. Otuzemba VIP is also identified for future formalisation.The mayor emphasized collaboration with entities like the Shack Dwellers Federation of Namibia, the Build Together programme, and the National Housing Enterprise to support housing construction in Opuwo. In terms of investment promotion, land is being allocated for projects like shopping malls, mining activities, and a youth complex to attract investors and expand employment opportunities, especially for the youth.Kakondo highlighted that stakeholder engagement is crucial to the town's development agenda. The council is actively conducting community meetings, stakeholder consultations, and trade fairs, while partnering with development organizations s uch as GIZ Namibia and Development Workshop Namibia. The council's commitment focuses on accelerating development in Opuwo, improving living conditions, supporting economic growth, and ensuring infrastructure keeps pace with population growth.
