Nairobi: The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform has issued an alert to farmers in the Otjozondjupa Region regarding a confirmed locust outbreak affecting the Tsumkwe, Okakarara, and Omatako constituencies, as well as the Grootfontein district.According to Namibia Press Agency, Clarence Tjiho, Chief Agricultural Scientific Officer for the region, reported that locust control teams encountered extensive swarms in Otjituuo and parts of the Grootfontein Constituency on Thursday morning. Tjiho confirmed that the swarm seen in the Mangetti area of the Tsumkwe Constituency was also observed in the Mkata community forest and Otjituuo over the preceding days.In response to the outbreak, control teams began ground-spraying operations on Thursday afternoon. The targeted areas include Farm Omloop, Farm Otjikoti-located approximately five kilometers from Otjituuo-and Farm Omarindi. Tjiho emphasized that due to the extensive size of the swarm, effective control efforts require coordinated, simult aneous spraying by both vehicle-mounted units and foot teams.Farmers in the Otjozondjupa Region are being urged to stay alert and report any locust movements on their farms to aid in controlling the outbreak effectively.
