The 2022 Lüderitz Crayfish Festival will take place at the end of April next year, Waterfront Development Company Chief Executive Officer Fluksman Samuehl announced on Tuesday.

The festivals for 2020 and 2021 were cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent measures put in place by government to help curb the spread of the disease, such as the prohibition of large gatherings.

Samuehl made the remarks here on Tuesday during a dinner held in honour of Olympic silver medallist Christine Mboma, her fellow sprinter Beatrice Masilingi and their coach, Henk Botha.

He said the annual festival that started in 2008 has become a major attraction, drawing many visitors to the coastal town.

Samuehl urged the Lüderitz Town Council to establish a stakeholders’ communication forum with the aim of engaging local businesses, adding that the forum will help build partnerships and ultimately help generate value.

“It is essential to have a well-defined and well-structured forum to discuss matters of common interest and to identify and evaluate existing and emerging challenges and bottlenecks in the way of development and to put forward proposals for the betterment of our town,” he said.

Samuehl said Mboma and Masilingi have made the world pay attention to Namibia.

“You have lifted the spirit of Namibians and restored their hopes. Today many young people not only in Namibia, but across the globe, look up to you for inspiration. What you have achieved is truly remarkable. Thank you for your courage, determination, self-confidence and discipline,” he stated.

In a speech read on her behalf, ||Kharas governor Aletha Frederick said the fact that both sprinters qualified for the final of the 200 meter race at the Tokyo Olympics was an experience that shattered all barriers that divide Namibians, be it political, tribal, social or cultural.

“Your performance dismantled regionalism and united the Namibian nation. Always remember the nation is looking at you. Continue to inspire the young ones, your historical background and rise to fame have given hope to those who come from similar social settings,” Frederick said.
