Windhoek: The Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (MICT) Hardap office on Monday launched a Digital Literacy Training programme in collaboration with the ProNamib Conservation Centre in Maltah¶he. It is aimed at equipping participants with practical digital skills to improve access to employment, business opportunities, and essential online services.
According to Namibia Press Agency, the initiative goes beyond teaching participants basic computer operations, focusing instead on developing practical skills needed to succeed in an increasingly digital world. Speaking at the opening of the training, MICT Hardap regional media officer Samwel Matende emphasized the importance of equipping participants with skills to access information, communicate effectively, apply for employment opportunities, start and grow businesses, and confidently navigate the digital world.
The training is scheduled to run over two weeks from 27 July to 07 August 2026, with 20 participants expected to attend, of which 10 will be trained each week. The training forms part of the ministry's Digital Computer Literacy Programme, launched in 2023 to improve digital literacy in rural communities.
Matende noted that technology has become an integral part of everyday life, making digital literacy essential for social and economic participation. He urged participants to fully commit themselves to the training by asking questions, practising consistently, and supporting one another throughout the five-day programme.
According to Matende, the knowledge and skills gained during the training have the potential to transform not only the lives of individual participants but also those of their families and communities. He described the programme as the start of a lifelong learning journey and expressed confidence that participants would complete the training empowered, more confident, and better prepared to seize opportunities presented by the digital age.
The Digital Literacy Training forms part of MICT's efforts to promote digital inclusion and ensure that communities are equipped with the skills required to participate meaningfully in Namibia's growing digital economy.
