Mariental:Community members in Mariental have petitioned the Mariental Magistrate's Court and Hardap Regional Police, urging for accountability and an investigation into the conditions that led to the release on bail of Jackson Arikumbi, who is now suspected of murdering Valerie Rooi.

According to Namibia Press Agency, Rooi was allegedly murdered on October 31, 2026, just ten days after Arikumbi was released on bail regarding the 2024 murder of Chriszelda Kawari. Arikumbi is currently on the run, and the Namibian Police Force has initiated a manhunt for him.

The community submitted two petitions highlighting concerns about public safety, the handling of serious criminal cases, police investigative capacity, and whether relevant information was adequately presented during the initial bail proceedings. In their petition to NamPol Hardap Regional Commander Sydney Philander, residents called for a review of the communication and coordination between investigating officers and prosecutors, especially about information affecting bail decisions in serious criminal cases.

Community representative Prins Immanuel stated, "The gruesome murder of Valerie Rooi has sent shockwaves through our community and beyond." The residents clarified that their petition was not an attack on individual police officers but a demand for institutional accountability, improved policing standards, and urgent interventions to restore public confidence.

The petition also expressed concerns about the availability of adequate police personnel and operational vehicles in the Hardap Region, particularly in Mariental. Residents urged the regional police commander to ensure that investigating officers provide prosecutors with complete, accurate, and timely information before bail proceedings. They also emphasized the need for authorities to communicate potential threats to victims, complainants, and witnesses, as well as risks of intimidation and interference with investigations.

In addition, the petition called for serious offences, including murder, rape, and gender-based violence, to receive appropriate investigative attention. In their petition to the Mariental Magistrate's Court, residents questioned the information presented by the prosecution during Arikumbi's initial bail application and whether the seriousness of the previous murder allegation was adequately highlighted.

They argued that the circumstances surrounding Rooi's death raised serious questions about whether the potential danger posed by the suspect was sufficiently considered before his release. While acknowledging the constitutional independence of the courts and the presumption of innocence afforded to accused persons, the petitioners stressed that public safety and the interests of justice must be carefully weighed during bail proceedings.
