MEFT Hosts Stakeholder Consultation on Gambling Regulation Amendments in Kunene

Opuwo: The Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism (MEFT) on Monday held a public and industry stakeholder consultation at Opuwo on proposed amendments to gambling regulations under the Gaming and Entertainment Control Act, 2018. MEFT Deputy Director of Gaming, Simeon Iingwapha, stated that the consultations are part of ongoing efforts to review and strengthen the regulatory framework governing gaming activities in Namibia.According to Namibia Press Agency, the engagement brought together industry operators, community representatives, and government officials to provide input on the proposed changes. 'The purpose of these consultations is to ensure that all stakeholders are given an opportunity to contribute to the amendment process. This helps us develop regulations that are inclusive, practical, and responsive to the needs of the industry,' Iingwapha said.Iingwapha noted that the current legal framework, including the Act and its subsequent amendments, is under review to improve compliance, enhanc e oversight, and safeguard the integrity of the gaming sector. He added that stakeholder consultations are a legal requirement before any amendments or guidelines can be finalised, ensuring transparency and promoting accountability within the sector.Iingwapha further mentioned that the review process aligns with national development priorities, noting that the gaming and entertainment industry contributes to tourism and economic growth. 'The sector must be regulated in a way that promotes responsible gaming while also contributing to the socio-economic development of the country,' he said.He also highlighted plans to decentralise the ministry's services to improve access across all regions, including Kunene, and to strengthen engagement and regulatory enforcement at the regional level. The consultations in Opuwo form part of a broader nationwide engagement programme aimed at gathering input before finalising the proposed amendments.
