Kigali: Merck Foundation, the philanthropic branch of Merck KGaA Germany, in collaboration with the First Ladies of Africa and Asia, and partners from various ministries, celebrated International Women's Day 2026 by highlighting their long-standing commitment to empowering women and girls through education and healthcare initiatives. This celebration marks over 14 years of impactful programs aimed at fostering development and gender equality.According to African Press Organization, Senator Dr. Rasha Kelej (Ret.), CEO of Merck Foundation, emphasized the organization's dedication to empowering women and girls not just on International Women's Day, but as an integral part of their ongoing mission. Over the past 14 years, Merck Foundation, alongside First Ladies of Africa and Asia, has implemented initiatives such as More Than a Mother, the Merck Foundation Scholarships Program, Educating Linda, and the STEM Program to support women and girls in reaching their full potential.The More Than a Mother movement se eks to empower infertile and childless women by providing access to education, information, healthcare, and promoting a change in societal mindsets. The Merck Foundation Scholarships Program has significantly transformed patient care across Africa, Asia, and beyond by awarding over 2,500 scholarships in 44 critical medical specialties. Notably, nearly 50% of these scholarships, totaling about 1,200, have been awarded to women medical graduates, furthering their journey to become healthcare leaders.Education remains a cornerstone of Merck Foundation's strategy, as highlighted by Dr. Kelej. Through the Educating Linda program, the foundation has granted more than 1,200 annual scholarships to underprivileged African schoolgirls from 19 countries, ensuring they have the opportunity to complete their education.Merck Foundation also champions women in Science and Technology through its STEM Program and the annual Merck Foundation Africa Research Summit (MARS) Awards, which celebrate outstanding African Women Re searchers and Young African Researchers.In collaboration with the First Ladies of Africa and Asia, Merck Foundation has launched annual awards in media, song, film, and fashion to raise awareness about women empowerment and related themes such as ending gender-based violence and promoting girl education.The foundation's efforts extend to creative initiatives, including children's storybooks, animation films, and awareness songs, all aimed at promoting girl education. These initiatives are also featured in their TV program, Our Africa by Merck Foundation.Merck Foundation's extensive library of multimedia content, including songs and films, is accessible online, further amplifying their message and commitment to supporting women and girls globally.
