More than 700 learners in Grades 8, 9 and 10 who failed to get placement in the Rundu Circuit started classes in tents here on Monday the Director of Education in the Kavango East Region, Fanuel Kapapero, has said.

Kapapero told Nampa on Monday the learners who were home for close to four weeks after school started, will be taught in tents set up on the Rundu Trade Fair premises.

“This arrangement is temporary as construction of actual classrooms will resume this year. The bid for classroom construction tenders is closing today,” Kapapero said.

He said the 20 tents acquired through the Office of the Prime Minister were set up by the directorate on Friday. Chairs and desks were acquired through the regional council.

So far 12 teachers have volunteered to teach the learners, but the tent school is eventually expected to have 21 teachers.

Teachers will be transferred from some schools on a voluntary basis, Kapapero stated.

“Copies of things like syllabuses and other relevant documents to implement the curriculum were made available to teachers on time for them to commence teaching on Monday,” he added.

Ablution facilities to be used by both teachers and learners were also made available on the premises and electricity is being provided.

The directorate is still waiting on another consignment of about 1 000 chairs, procured through the regional council as well, by Friday.

Last week learners who still had not been placed, along with their parents and guardians, visited the Rundu education circuit office seeking answers and the directorate promised that the learners would join their fellow classmates by Monday.

The registration of learners is still taking place this week.
