Erongo Region Governor Neville Andre Itope has described the late Alpheus Muheua’s death as a heavy blow, particularly to young leaders who he said could have benefitted from his wisdom.

In a tribute to Muheua, Itope said the Erongo Region and the Namibian nation at large have been robbed of a selfless, dedicated and committed leader who put the interests of the people first.

“We are however comforted in the sense that during his life, we took a leaf or two from him, which will undoubtedly guide us as we move forward in addressing the triple challenges of poverty, unemployment and inequality,” the governor said.

He noted the pivotal role played by Muheua in what was known as the Western Region, now the Erongo Region, during the liberation struggle, as a Swapo Party member, trade unionist and an activist for freedom.

“He was a very firm, soft spoken, but focused and determined leader. We will thus remember and honour him for the role he played during the dark days of the liberation struggle, as lawmaker in Parliament and as the Deputy Minister of Labour and Social Welfare.”

Itope expressed his condolences to the late Muheua’s wife, children, bereaved family and friends, and wished them strength during their time of mourning.

The 65-year-old Muheua died in a Swakopmund hospital on Wednesday.

The former NUNW president also served as Deputy Minister of Labour and Social Welfare.
