The Namib Lions Adaptive Sports Academy will this coming weekend host a training camp and coaching clinics for people living with disabilities at its training ground at the Katutura Youth Complex.

The athletics club, which is based in Katutura, is an inclusive sports club that focuses on the development of sports in Namibia, with its major focus on track and field for athletes living with disabilities and able-bodied.

In an interview with Nampa on Tuesday, Namib Lions founding member and coach Michael Hamukwaya said the academy supports athletes from disadvantaged communities with the hope of giving life to the youth through sports.

“As we all know it starts with sport and change will be seen in our communities. We are currently working with the spinal ward at the central hospital and a group of about 20 patients with spinal problems will be joining us for the training camp,” he said, adding that the club is also calling on community members to take their relatives who are living with a disability for this training camp.

Hamukwaya stated that the Namib Lions Adaptive Sports Academy hosts activities weekly, therefore they would like more such athletes to be introduced to sports.

“From Monday to Thursday we host training and every second Saturday of the month, starting on 03 September 2022, we will host our awareness camps about sports for people with disabilities,” Hamukwaya said.

He also said the training camps are set to promote healthy living and encourage an active lifestyle in the different communities, hence the reason they are calling on community members to take part in this programme.

“This grassroots movement is to support the athletes to keep living healthy and accord them an opportunity to participate in sport,” he said.

On Saturday, the event will takeplace from 09h00 to 12h00 at the Katutura Youth Complex with field events and clinics for wheelchair users, para-cycling, healthy living information session, fitness class as well as a 2.5 kilometre fun walk or run for everyone.
