The Namibia and Angolan governments on Tuesday officially reopened the Sarasungu border post at Rundu.

The opening of the border comes after three bilateral meetings between the two countries, where they agreed to reopen the borders to enable the movement of people and goods to enhance the citizens’ socio-economic status.

Speaking during the official opening of the Sarasungu border, Governor of the Kavango East Region Bonifatius Wakudumo said the borders were closed in 2020 as a measure of controlling the COVID-19 pandemic.

“To enter Namibia or Angola, visitors must present a negative PCR test and a vaccination card with two doses,” he said.

He said those with one dose will be subjected to a seven-day quarantine at own cost.

Angolan citizen Surika Euzebio who lives at the border town of Calai, told this news agency on the sidelines he likes to cross over into Rundu because it offers him various shops compared to Calai where he is from.

“Health facilities and services are other reasons why my family and I cross the border as well as informal job opportunities such as domestic work for our wives,” he said.

Representative of the Governor of Quando Cubango Province in Angola, Agostino Dos Santos called on residents of both countries to make sure they have all the appropriate documents to pass at the border and avoid problems with the authorities in charge.

He said the border was closed for two years thus with opening he appealed to citizens to stop taking short cuts or cross the border at illegal places.
