Windhoek: Namibia's swimmers delivered a much-improved display on the second day of the championships on Saturday, with several athletes producing impressive individual performances and advancing to the next stage of the competition. The opening day of the championships proved challenging for Team Namibia, with several swimmers failing to progress beyond the preliminary heats. Oliver Durand was eliminated in the men's 200m individual medley, while Jessica Humphrey (women's 50m butterfly), Jose Canjulo and Ronan Zuberg Wantenaar (men's 100m breaststroke), as well as the men's 4x100m freestyle relay team, also fell short of qualification.According to Namibia Press Agency, the team bounced back strongly on Saturday, with Humphrey becoming Namibia's first swimmer to reach the next round after qualifying in the women's 100m backstroke. Humphrey finished fifth in her heat but recorded a fast enough time to secure her place in the next stage of the competition. Durand also impressed in the men's 100m butterfly, wi nning his heat in 54.52 seconds. However, Canjulo and Luke Beukes narrowly missed out on qualification after finishing fifth and fourth in their respective heats. Australia's Matthew Temple recorded the fastest time across the five men's 100m butterfly heats, clocking 51.30 seconds.In the bowls women's pairs sectional play, Namibia's Amanda Steenkamp and Diana Viljoen enjoyed a successful outing in Section B, defeating South Africa's Thabelo Muvhango and Jacqui Janse van Rensburg. After losing the opening set 6-4, the Namibian duo responded by winning the second set 7-4 before clinching victory in the deciding tie-break.Namibia's artistic gymnastics team of Maria Humphries, Anne-Leen Thorburn, Jonie Thorburn and Sureshni Andrew also impressed across the floor, balance beam, uneven bars and vault. Their strong overall performance earned them second place in the team standings, securing qualification for another day of competition on Sunday.More than 72 nations and territories are competing at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, where 215 gold medals will be contested across 10 sports from 23 July to 02 August.
