Windhoek:NamPower is preparing for an expected rise in demand due to industrial expansion in oil and gas, as well as mineral beneficiation, which will place additional pressures on its generation and transmission capacity. This was stated by the board's deputy chairperson, Paulina Elago, during the launch of the company's 2026-2030 Integrated Strategic Business Plan (ISBP).

According to Namibia Press Agency, Elago emphasized the importance of the plan, describing it as a "coordinated, company-wide strategy" aimed at leveraging strengths, addressing weaknesses, and mitigating risks. The strategy is based on four main pillars optimizing financial sustainability, becoming a world-class customer-focused utility, ensuring supply and capacity security, and optimizing talent.

The plan includes 15 objectives spread across these pillars, with a significant focus on security of supply and capacity. Currently, NamPower owns 563.5MW of generation, and upcoming projects are planned to add 195MW within the next one to two years and 335MW in two to five years. Long-term projects include a 440MW Baynes hydropower plant projected for 2032/33, a 475MW gas-to-power plant in 2032, and 300MW of wind energy in 2031.

Elago highlighted that the development of this plan involved extensive consultations with the Government, the regulator, and key stakeholders in the electricity sector. It aligns with national strategic goals, including Vision 2030, the sixth National Development Plan (NDP6), the National Energy Policy, the Sustainable Development Goals, and the Public Enterprises Governance Act.

Progress on the ISBP will be tracked through the Corporate Performance Management System, linking the corporate scorecard to business units and individual performance agreements. Elago also mentioned that the plan aligns with the evolving Modified Single Buyer (MSB) market structure, reinforcing NamPower's commitment to "transparency, accountability, and integrity" with its stakeholders. The revised vision aims for NamPower to be a world-class utility offering innovative, sustainable, and affordable electricity solutions.
