Windhoek: President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has hailed former President Hifikepunye Pohamba's lifetime of service, sacrifice, and leadership on the occasion of his 91st birthday on Tuesday. In a birthday message issued by the presidency, Nandi-Ndaitwah said Pohamba's 91st birthday provides an opportunity for the nation to reflect on a life closely intertwined with Namibia's liberation struggle and the development of the independent state.According to Namibia Press Agency, Nandi-Ndaitwah remarked that some birthdays simply mark the passing of another year, while others, like Pohamba's, invite a nation to pause and reflect upon the journey of a lifetime. She emphasized that at 91, Pohamba belongs to a generation of Namibians who have experienced the country in profoundly different times.Pohamba served as Namibia's second president, succeeding Founding President Sam Nujoma from 2005 to 2015. He was born on 18 August 1935. Nandi-Ndaitwah highlighted that Pohamba experienced colonial rule, joined the struggle f or national liberation, witnessed Namibia's Independence in 1990, and later served as one of the leaders responsible for building the new nation.She stated that Pohamba witnessed the birth of the republic in 1990 and, over the decades, has seen the country grow into a peaceful, democratic, and increasingly prosperous nation. Nandi-Ndaitwah noted that few gifts in life can be greater than living long enough to see the fruits of sacrifices made many decades before.Nandi-Ndaitwah also credited Pohamba's presidency with contributing to the consolidation of democracy and the strengthening of national institutions, while highlighting his leadership grounded in humility, reconciliation, national unity, and respect for the rule of law.She reiterated that the generation of Comrade Pohamba fought to secure political freedom and expressed the current generation's responsibility to preserve that freedom while advancing economic independence, creating opportunities for young people, reducing inequality, and ensuring that the promise of independence is increasingly felt in the everyday lives of all Namibians.Nandi-Ndaitwah extended birthday wishes to Pohamba on behalf of the Namibian people and Government, wishing him continued good health, strength, peace, and happiness.
