Windhoek: President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, who serves as the Commander-in-Chief of the Namibian Defence Force, inspected the Shaanxi Y-9E aircraft at a formal ceremony held at Hosea Kutako International Airport on Wednesday.
According to Namibia Press Agency, the aircraft was procured from China in November last year and represents a boost to the operational capacity of the Namibian Air Force.
The report further stated that the Shaanxi Y-9E will enhance both military readiness and support during humanitarian missions. Speaking at the occasion, Air Force Commander, Air Vice Marshal Teofilus Shaende, highlighted the aircraft’s speed and cargo capability.
“The aircraft will play a vital role in transporting troops and equipment, as well as in missions such as drought relief and flood rescues,” said the Air Force commander. The statement also revealed that Namibia is the first country outside China to receive this model of aircraft, terming it an achievement that strengthens both defence and diplomatic ties with Beijing.
Vice President Lucia Witbooi, Prime Minister Elijah Ngurare, Defence Minister Frans Kapofi, Deputy Defence Minister Charles Mubita, the Chief of the Defence Force, Air Marshal Martin Kambulu Pinehas, senior ministry officials, and senior military officers accompanied Nandi-Ndaitwah during the aircraft inspection.
