Chairperson of the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC)’s Ministerial Committee of the Organ Troika (MCO), Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, said the Committee still has a lot to do in addressing the challenges faced in various regions.

Nandi-Ndaitwah said this during the official opening of the SADC MCO on Monday in the capital, where she said the SADC member states such as Mozambique, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the kingdoms of Lesotho and Eswatini will provide an update on their current security situations, as they were declared unstable and worrisome, during the SADC MCO meeting on 30 November 2022.

“The outcome of the meeting indicated that more work needed to be done to ensure that we do not lose the gains achieved towards the consolidation of our democracies, the strengthening of the respect for the rule of law and the safety and security of our citizens,” Nandi-Ndaitwah said.

At the same occasion, SADC Executive Secretary, Elias Magosi, said since the last SADC MCO meeting in November 2022, the committee has continued to seek ways and means of consolidating peace and stability in SADC.

In addition, Magosi stated that the security situation in Mozambique and the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) remains unstable, volatile and requires urgent attention.

“Our commitment to finding lasting peace and security in DRC remains strong since the deployment of the Force Intervention Brigade (FIB),” Magosi said.

The Extraordinary Organ Troika Summit is scheduled to take place on Tuesday in the capital, where they will focus on the recommendations made during the SADC MCO on Monday.
