Windhoek: President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah on Wednesday paid tribute to the late Toini Mwahangange Hausiku, describing her and her late husband as steadfast patriots whose legacy of unity should continue to guide Namibia's pursuit of economic emancipation. Nandi-Ndaitwah visited the Hausiku family residence in Soweto, Katutura, to console the bereaved family following Hausiku's death at a Windhoek hospital on Sunday. She was 72.According to Namibia Press Agency, the late Hausiku was the widow of liberation struggle icon and former deputy prime minister Marco Hausiku, who died in August 2021. She also served the Swapo Party at local government level, including as deputy mayor of the Rundu Town Council in 2019. Addressing family members, friends, and mourners, Nandi-Ndaitwah extended her condolences while reflecting on the contribution the Hausiku family made to Namibia's liberation struggle and nation-building.'The Hausiku family is a well-known family in Swapo. And now that Tate Hausiku is no more, Meme i s no more there; we are here ready to comfort the children of Tate Marco and Meme. So I am just saying sincere condolences to all of us,' she said. The president urged Namibians to honour the family's legacy by remaining committed to the values they championed during the liberation struggle and after independence.'The only way we can really respect and remember this family is to appreciate what they have done for our country through our party Swapo,' said the Namibian Head of State and president of Swapo. Nandi-Ndaitwah said that unity had been the cornerstone of Namibia's liberation and remains equally important in addressing the country's socio-economic challenges.'We all know that if we were not united, we would not have liberated Namibia. And now that we have our political independence, we need to be united in order to win the economic struggle. And this is what the Hausiku family stood for,' she said. She also recalled the role played by the late Marco Hausiku, with the support of his wife, in establ ishing the Swapo Party School, where members of the party were taught the movement's values and responsibilities.'Some of you are students at the party school that Marco, and of course assisted by Meme, had set up, where we are tuned mentally as party members as to what our responsibility toward one another and everything is just around unity,' said Nandi-Ndaitwah.
