The National Council (NC) is set to celebrate its 30-year anniversary next week Thursday.

NC Chairperson Lukas Muha said this, whilst officially opening the seventh session of the sixth NC on Monday.

The NC was officially inaugurated on 23 February 1993 by Founding President Sam Nujoma.

Muha informed the members of the august House the 30-year anniversary is to be held under the theme, ‘Celebrating Three Decades of Promoting Inclusive and Participatory Democracy Through Regional Representation’ and is in progress as planned.

“NC as the Upper House of Parliament has for the past 30 years constituted an important forum for the critical review of Bills passed by the National Assembly. The National Council, therefore, deemed it necessary to reflect on the 30-year journey next week Thursday,” Muha said.

Furthermore, the chairperson congratulated the newly sworn-in member of the House Andreas Amundjindi. This appointment follows the death of former Okaku Constituency councillor Hannu Kapenda on 19 December 2022.

Amundjindi is the regional councillor of Uukwiyuushona Constituency in Oshana Region and he replaces Andreas Uutoni of the Ongwediva Constituency who was elected as the chairperson of the Oshana Regional Council.

The seventh session of the sixth NC is scheduled to last for four days. It is expected to deal with the reports of the NC standing committees, to consider and review the NC Standing Rules and Orders, to consider and adopt the NC Strategic Plan 2023-2028 and lastly consider the outstanding regional council reports and other reports.

The House also sent out its condolences to the people of Turkey and Syria by having a moment of silence for the thousands of lives lost after a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck the region.
