While describing his 17-years at the helm of the Namibian Police Force (NamPol) as highly taxing, outgoing Inspector General (IG) Sebastian Ndeitunga believes he executed his duties with honour, dignity and dedication.

After joining NamPol in 1994, Ndeitunga retired from NamPol on Wednesday.

Speaking during the change of command ceremony at the Israel Patrick Iyambo Police College in Windhoek, Ndeitunga said the journey of heading NamPol was not easy, noting that sometimes it was smooth and other times rough, but he managed to finish the race.

“The task I was assigned as the inspector-general was not an easy one, but I stand proud today to say that together with a competent team of senior police managers, those in office and the retired ones, we have executed that task with honour, dignity and dedication,” he said.

Ndeitunga acknowledged that NamPol faces challenges due to the economic downturn, which hampers the force’s most important needs, which is why efforts and resources only reach some areas and neglect others.

He further noted that it is important for NamPol to continue strategising maximally to deliver policing services with limited resources. However, he added that the area of training and retraining of officers and members should not be neglected, saying it is the backbone for delivering excellent policing services.

Ndeitunga extended gratitude to the men and women in uniform, saying police officers are what holds a society together and they should regard themselves as a source of moral strength, confidence and happiness for all Namibians who seek to live a safe and secure life.

“Continue rendering professional services to all Namibians and visitors alike, without considering colour, tribal groups or social (aspects). I encourage the entire management and rank-and-file of the force to continue rendering support to the incoming inspector-general. This is very important to ensure continuity in effective and efficient provision of policing services,” he noted.

Ndeitunga handed over the police command duties to Inspector-General Major General Joseph Shikongo, who was appointed by President Hage Geingob on Monday.
