Windhoek: Works and Transport Minister, Veikko Nekundi, has called on contractors working on major infrastructure projects in the Kunene Region to speed up implementation and ensure that projects are completed within set timelines. Nekundi made the remarks on Wednesday during an inspection visit to assess progress on several ongoing projects, including the Opuwo-Otjivize-Okanguati road, Opuwo-Oruvandjei road, Oute Bridge, and other infrastructure developments in the region.
According to Namibia Press Agency, Nekundi was accompanied by Kunene Region Governor Vipuakuje Muharukua and Chief Executive Officer of the Roads Authority (RA) Mbahupu Hippy Tjivikua. During the visit, they held a briefing with the RA, OTESA Civil Engineers, and Brandberg Construction Engineers. Nekundi emphasized that government infrastructure projects must bring tangible benefits to communities, warning that delays and poor workmanship would not be tolerated.
Nekundi highlighted the importance of the Oute Bridge project, citing challenges faced by communities, including loss of lives due to the absence of proper infrastructure. He mentioned that funding challenges affecting some projects had been resolved, allowing contractors to proceed with full implementation. Nekundi stated that the issue of funding must be addressed, emphasizing the significance of ground-breaking ceremonies translating into meaningful progress.
The minister also instructed contractors to protect workers' rights, including signing employment contracts, paying prescribed wages, and providing personal protective equipment. He stressed that employees should not be treated as 'non-humans' and must be respected and allowed to benefit from their employment. Nekundi urged contractors to prioritize employing local residents through temporary job opportunities, contributing to empowering communities and integrating them into the economy.
Following his inspection in Kunene, Nekundi is expected to proceed to the Tsandi-Onesi-Epalela road project in the Omusati Region to assess progress.
