Windhoek: Prime Minister Elijah Ngurare has assured Namibian students residing in Cuba that the Namibian government stands resolutely behind them. Speaking to scholars enduring hardships driven by external economic sanctions in Havana, Cuba, over the weekend, Ngurare vowed that the state will leave no stone unturned in finding immediate and sustainable solutions to ease their plight.According to Namibia Press Agency, a statement issued by the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) on Sunday said during the engagement, the students outlined the grim realities of their day-to-day lives in the island nation. Chief among their struggles are persistent, widespread electricity blackouts that severely hamper their demanding study schedules, coupled with a declining quality of food served in university hostels.Despite these daunting conditions, the Premier expressed admiration for the resilience, discipline, and unwavering optimism displayed by the young Namibians, it said. Reaffirming the government's duty of care, Ngurare emphasised that the administration in Windhoek is acutely aware of the severe circumstances facing the scholars.'We cannot be oblivious to the situation which we know is not of your making. We cannot betray you. We will not leave you alone. We will stand with you. Our prayer is for you to succeed,' said Ngurare while addressing students at the Namibian Embassy.According to the statement, the majority of the Namibians in Cuba are pursuing specialised degrees in critical fields such as medicine and engineering, with a number having already completed their studies and now preparing to return home holding Namibia Qualification Authority (NQA)-accredited medical qualifications.Ngurare further highlighted that their perseverance directly fulfils the vision of Founding President Dr Sam Nujoma, who urged Namibians to master technical and medical disciplines vital for national self-reliance. The Prime Minister concluded by reinforcing that government backing for these international scholars is an intenti onal strategy, adding that by shielding students from sanction-induced crises, the eighth administration continues to actively align its resources with its core priority areas, education and youth empowerment, driving directly toward the future Namibia aims to build, the statement read.
