Oshakati: A total of 54 houses will soon be constructed in Oshakati North by the National Housing Enterprise (NHE). The site has been handed over to three capable contractors, and the N.dollars 15.6 million project is expected to be completed by April 2026.

According to Namibia Press Agency, speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday, NHE Infrastructure Development Manager, Indileni Iipinge, said the moment marks not just the start of a new development, but a continuation of NHE's unwavering commitment to providing affordable housing to Namibians. 'These homes will vary in size and type, and will be tailored to meet the needs of low-income families. These developments have brought dignity, security, and opportunity to hundreds of families and continue to shape the urban landscape of this town,' he said.

A total of 100 jobs will be created, contributing to local employment and economic development. In addition to the 54 houses, the Oshakati Town Council has allocated Ompumbu Extension 3 to NHE with 237 erven, of which 228 have been zoned for single residential housing. The Ongwediva Town Council has also allocated 260 undeveloped single residential erven at Efidi Extension 6 to NHE.

'We are also working closely with the Ongwediva Town Council to consider applicants from their housing waiting list for this planned development in Efidi Extension 6. In Oshakati's Ompumbu Extension 3, 70 erven have been reserved for our men and women in uniform,' said Iipinge. He added that the designs for bulk and internal municipal services for both Oshakati and Ongwediva are already at an advanced stage, and once the drawings are approved, servicing and construction will begin. The projects will cover a combined 488 erven, a significant step towards reducing the national housing backlog.

Iipinge further said that the partnership between NHE and the Oshakati Town Council is a shining example of what can be achieved when local authorities and national institutions work together for the benefit of the people. He urged all other local authorities across Namibia to follow Oshakati's example and make land available to NHE for housing development, in order to deliver affordable housing to all citizens.
