Ohangwena Celebrates Launch of Universal Service Fund Communications Tower

Ohangwena: Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Emma Theofelus, launched the first communications tower under the Universal Service Fund (USF) in Epinga, Ohangwena Region.

According to Namibia Press Agency, the USF is a N.dollars 145 million government initiative aimed at expanding connectivity in remote areas over three years, with a focus on underserved and unserved communities. During the launch event, Theofelus emphasized the importance of ensuring that every Namibian has access to essential communication services, regardless of their location.

Theofelus stated that the USF tower marks significant progress towards inclusion and empowerment, highlighting the government's commitment to bridging the digital divide. She noted that the project aligns with Namibia's national development priorities, recognizing digital connectivity as essential for social and economic advancement.

Theofelus further explained that access to mobile networks can enhance livelihoods by supporting various sectors, including education, agriculture, business, and healthcare. She provided examples such as enabling learners in Epinga to access online study materials and farmers to check market prices in real-time.

Theofelus also highlighted the benefits for small business owners and healthcare services, noting that mobile connectivity can expand markets, create jobs, and improve healthcare delivery through telemedicine services.
