Ohangwena: The Ohangwena Region has been shaken by the tragic news of three teachers who have committed suicide within a span of three days. The teachers, aged 28, 34, and 39, were identified as Nestory Namhindo, Titus Nuuyi, and Lukas Kalwenya, respectively.
According to Namibia Press Agency, the first incident involved Nestory Namhindo of Eenhana Secondary School, who reportedly took his life by hanging in a bush on Saturday. The authorities, represented by Ohangwena Crime Investigation Coordinator Deputy Commissioner Melanie Mbuuru, confirmed that no foul play is suspected and no suicide note was discovered.
The second incident occurred at Omhito location, where Lukas Kalwenya of Ohehonge Combined School was found hanging in his shower on Tuesday evening. Similarly, no foul play was suspected, and no note was left behind.
On the same day, Titus Nuuyi from Enyana Combined School was discovered dead in the bush near Elia Combined School in Okongo village. His body was found hanging from a tree branch by children on their way to school, who then informed nearby residents and the police. A suicide note was reportedly found at the scene, and investigations are ongoing.
In light of these tragic events, Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts, and Culture Minister Sanet Steenkamp expressed profound sorrow and emphasized the importance of addressing mental health and financial stress issues. She highlighted the loss felt by the educational community and reiterated the ministry's commitment to supporting teachers and learners through comprehensive mental health and financial literacy programs.
