The eighth edition of the annual Dr Hage Geingob Cup was launched here on Wednesday with an amount of N.dollars 3.4 million rechannelled towards a charity initiative instead of the usual football competition.

In 2020, the President’s cup was called off due to the COVID-19 pandemic but organisers came up with a charity drive that saw pensioners across the country benefiting from the scheme.

With the COVID-19 pandemic still present, as well as lack of sporting infrastructure currently hampering the football family in Namibia, this year’s competition’s funds will once again be channelled towards a charity drive that will see thousands of orphanages across the country benefiting through various donations.

Speaking at the launch, President Geingob said the charity drive replacing the football competition will once again benefit the disadvantaged.

“The sponsors, who have been with us, know what we are doing is really more important at the moment, because of the times that we are in and what we are going through, it’s more important to hold the hands of those who are in need,” he said.

This year’s Geingob Cup charity initiative will benefit 26 orphanages that will be receiving items such as television sets, toiletries, toys, food parcels and other essential goods.

The goods to be donated will be financed with the N.dollars 3.450 million meant for this year’s tournament, which stems from MTC’s N.dollars 1.6 million sponsorship and Namibia Breweries Limited’s N.dollars 1.5 million sponsorship, as well as a N.dollars 350 000 sponsorship from Bank Windhoek.
