Windhoek: The Oshakati Town Council on Monday officially launched its Traffic Law Enforcement Unit, with Minister of Works and Transport Veikko Nekundi describing the initiative as a major step towards strengthening road safety and curbing reckless driving in the rapidly growing northern town.

According to Namibia Press Agency, the unit, established under the Road Traffic and Transport Act of 1999 and the Local Authorities Act of 1992, will enforce traffic regulations, municipal bylaws, and road safety measures, while complementing the work of the Namibian Police Force and other road safety stakeholders.

Speaking at the launch, Nekundi said the new unit reflects the government's commitment to creating a transport system that is safe, efficient, and responsive to the needs of growing urban centres. 'This occasion represents far more than the establishment of the town council's law enforcement capability. It reflects our commitment to strengthen road safety, improve compliance with our laws, enhance public service delivery, and safeguard the lives of all who use our roads,' he said.

Nekundi said the increase in road accidents requires tougher enforcement and urged officers not to be lenient in carrying out their duties. 'With the prevailing higher rate of road accidents, I advise the members of the newly established traffic law enforcement unit to be very strict in the execution of their duties. We must be stricter until we bring this to a better state,' he said.

Nekundi revealed that the Road Fund Administration has invested N$3 million during the 2025/26 financial year and an additional N$700,000 in the current financial year to establish the unit, including the procurement of vehicles, uniforms, equipment, and other operational resources.

Speaking at the same event, Oshana Region Governor Hofni Iipinge said the establishment of the specialised unit marks an important step in improving law enforcement and promoting responsible behaviour among residents and visitors. He said, besides regulating traffic, the unit will be responsible for enforcing the town council's by-laws on illegal parking, street trading, sanitation, public nuisance, environmental cleanliness, and the proper use of public spaces.
