Opuwo: Four popular Opuwo community members were recognised for their service at a street-renaming ceremony held by the Opuwo Town Council at the council's chambers on Wednesday. Air Commodore Abed Hafeni Hihepa, Chief Edward Uapundua Mumbuu, the late Kaezuu Tjijombo, and the late Tjiriamakaja Mburura are now honoured through the newly renamed streets.
According to Namibia Press Agency, Opuwo Mayor, Kasipo Kakondo, described the event as significant and a historic moment in the town's history. He emphasised that Opuwo's principles, tenacity, and legacy are reflected in the acknowledgement of these four individuals. Kakondo stated, "As a community, the naming of these streets represents a significant milestone. These men were crucial in forming our town's identity, preserving our customs, and motivating present and future generations."
He continued by urging the community to take pride in the streets and what they symbolize, expressing gratitude to the families of the honourees for allowing the town council to celebrate their achievements. Kakondo hoped the streets would inspire young people to aim high, serve with honour, and work tirelessly for the betterment of the community and nation.
Lucius Kaaree Mupia, chairperson of the council's management committee, also spoke at the event. He encouraged locals to continue suggesting names of individuals who have significantly influenced Opuwo's social, cultural, and developmental advancement, ensuring the preservation of their stories.
One of the beneficiaries expressed gratitude to the town council for the recognition and suggested the occasion be commemorated annually, possibly with a sporting event named in their honour.
Brigadier General Fillimon Hidimondjila Shafashike, representing Hihepa's family, shared how deeply the recognition affected them. He noted that Hihepa, born and raised in Opuwo, was known for his exceptional discipline and talent. As the first member of the Opuwo generation to fly a helicopter after joining the Namibian Defence Force in 1996, Hihepa's accomplishments continue to inspire many.
