Windhoek: The Otjozondjupa Regional Road Safety Campaign, organised by the Directorate of Education's Library Sub-Division, was officially launched in Otjiwarongo on Monday by Governor John ||Khamuseb. Speaking at the launch, ||Khamuseb emphasized the campaign's aim to increase road safety awareness among all users, particularly those traveling along the B1 road through the Otjozondjupa Region.According to Namibia Press Agency, the governor highlighted the significance of the B1 road as an economic lifeline, facilitating the transport of large volumes of cargo, goods, and services. He remarked on the troubling history of accidents on the B1 and advocated for shared responsibility in ensuring road safety, extending this duty beyond law enforcement agencies to include motorists, pedestrians, and businesses operating along the route.Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) Fund Public Education Manager, Eliphas Rukambe, revealed that 319 road crashes had occurred along the B1 in the Otjozondjupa Region since the beginni ng of the year. He noted that 40 lives were lost, positioning Otjozondjupa as the second-highest accident-risk zone in the country after Erongo. Rukambe identified excessive speeding, driver fatigue, mobile phone usage while driving, and substance abuse as significant contributors to these incidents.Otjozondjupa Regional Education Director, Gerhard Ndafenongo, outlined the campaign's schedule, which includes stops in Okahandja, Okakarara, Otavi, and concludes in Grootfontein. The program features accident simulation demonstrations and musical performances by artists Tate Buti and Kalux.The campaign, themed 'Safe Passage: Uniting the B1 Community Through Libraries,' receives support from the Namibian Police Force, municipal emergency services, the MVA Fund, the National Road Safety Council, the Roads Authority, the Road Fund Administration, the Ministry of Health and Social Services, and other stakeholders.
