Windhoek: The City of Windhoek ( CoW ) has identified over 150 streets in need of speed calming measures , which will be installed based on urgency and resources . This is according to CoW spokesperson Lydia Amutenya , who was responding to concerns by residents living along Augeikas and Ben Apollus streets in Katutura over fatalities caused by car accidents along these streets . Community activist Shaun Gariseb recently told Nampa most of these accidents involve reckless and negligent driving . He said there have been seven fatal accidents this year - four on Augeikas street and three on Ben Appolus street - which among others also claimed the lives of children . Gariseb expressed frustration at the City of Windhoek ' s alleged lack of action on the matter . Another concerned resident , Jacqueline Cloete said the streets do not have pedestrian crossings or speed bumps , posing a big danger to children . Cloete said the matter is a ticking time bomb as angry residents could retaliate against the drivers . App roached for comment , Amutenya acknowledged the issue of reckless driving along the two streets and said the municipality received a request for the installation of speed calming measures along these streets . She said they have identified over 150 streets in Windhoek that are in need of speed calming measures . ' Prioritisation is based on several factors , including the presence of schools and high pedestrian activity . Unfortunately , due to budgetary constraints , not all requests can be addressed immediately , but are actively worked on and addressed ,' Amutenya said . She said the request for speed calming measures on Augeikas Street has been included in the City ' s implementation plan for the current financial year . ' The budget allocation for these measures has already been advertised , and once the bid process is completed , the construction of speed bumps will commence to help reduce accidents caused by speeding ,' Amutenya said.Source: The Namibia Press Agency
