Abuja: Mr Zhu Songbo, Director, Political Section, Chinese Embassy in Nigeria, stated that achieving peaceful reunification and implementing the One Country, Two Systems approach is essential for addressing the Taiwan question. Zhu made these remarks during a media salon discussing the 'One-China Policy as the bedrock of China-Nigeria relations.'
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Zhu emphasized that open dialogue and mutual respect among all relevant parties are crucial for reaching this goal. He highlighted the importance of engaging in constructive discussions with stakeholders in Taiwan to bridge political differences under the one-China principle.
Regarding the One Country, Two Systems framework, Zhu explained that it serves as a mechanism to facilitate a harmonious reunification process. He reiterated the Chinese government's commitment to allowing Taiwan to maintain its societal structures and enjoy a considerable level of autonomy post-reunification. He assured that the two social systems would develop side by side for the foreseeable future, accommodating the interests and sentiments of compatriots in Taiwan.
Zhu also noted that the Taiwan Question is deeply rooted in historical contexts, primarily from the Chinese Civil War, and remains an internal matter for China. He condemned any attempts to promote separatism or 'Taiwan independence,' reiterating China's steadfast support for the One-China principle and its opposition to any divisive actions.
Commending Nigeria for upholding the One-China policy, Zhu highlighted the long-standing diplomatic relations between China and Nigeria based on mutual respect and recognition. He appreciated Nigeria's adherence to the One-China principle and its efforts, including the relocation of the Taipei Trade Office out of Abuja.
Prof. Sheriff Ibrahim, Head of the Department of Political Science and International Relations at UniAbuja and Director of the Centre for Contemporary China-Africa Research, emphasized the role of peaceful reunification in strengthening China-Nigeria relations. He urged Taiwan to align with this vision, asserting that any challenge to the One-China Policy would prove futile. Ibrahim reinforced Nigeria's commitment to the One-China principle, emphasizing the enduring bond with China.
