Katima mulilo: A 35-year-old woman made her first court appearance in the Katima Mulilo Magistrate's Court B on Friday on charges of perjury. Doreen Kabuba Santundila allegedly fabricated a housebreaking report in an attempt to defraud an insurance company and indicated her intention to formally plead guilty to the charges when questioned by State Prosecutor Cedric Mundia.
According to Namibia Press Agency, she was granted bail in the amount of N.dollars 3 000, which was later reduced to N.dollars 2 000 at her request. She was expected to be released from the holding cells upon payment of bail on Friday afternoon and is due to return to court on 03 June 2026 for a formal plea and finalisation of the matter.
At the time of her arrest on Thursday, Katima Mulilo Police Station Commander Chief Inspector Charles Mayumbelo said Santundila was arrested after reporting a housebreaking incident at her residence, during which she claimed that sofas she had purchased months earlier from a local furniture shop had been stolen. Police investigations later revealed that the sofas had instead been hidden at a friend's house in Nova Township in an attempt to defraud the insurance company.
