Owerri: Vice-President Kashim Shettima on Friday admonished Nigerian pilgrims for the 2025 Hajj to preserve the pride and dignity of the country during their stay in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Shettima gave the admonition at the inauguration of the first batch of pilgrims at the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri, Imo.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Shettima emphasized that the pilgrims are not just spiritual travelers but also ambassadors of Nigeria. He urged them to carry with them the pride and dignity of the nation, ensuring their conduct, devotion, and unity reflect the values Nigeria holds dear. He described the responsibility of representing the country as noble.
Shettima assured the pilgrims that President Bola Tinubu had provided all necessary resources to ensure the success of the 2025 Hajj. He stated that the President's commitment is part of his administration's covenant with the people to protect, support, and elevate every Nigerian in all spheres of life. He called on the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) and all stakeholders involved in the hajj operation to collaborate in meeting the government's expectations.
Shettima warned that the success of the Hajj operation depends on everyone involved. He noted that any oversight, whether by a logistical officer or a pilgrim, could turn a joyful experience into a catastrophe. He stressed the importance of maintaining the dignity of the flag they carry.
Shettima commended Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo for fostering an atmosphere of religious tolerance, mutual respect, and inclusion. He remarked that Uzodinma's support is symbolic of a nation harmonizing with itself.
Alhaji Sa'ad Abubakar III, the Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), also praised Uzodinma for promoting religious tolerance and peaceful coexistence in the state. The Sultan highlighted the event as a testament to Nigeria's diversity, with people of various faiths coming together for the national program. He stressed the importance of respect and tolerance for the nation's progress.
