The Namibian Police Force (NamPol) spokesperson, Deputy Commissioner Kauna Shikwambi, said that police reservists’ commitment in the execution of police duties are just like that of police officers.

In an interview with Nampa, Shikwambi said the reservists’ voluntary duties are commendable especially where ordinary NamPol members cannot be reached.

“As it is known that they are auxiliary members recruited to serve as reinforcement, to assist the Namibian Police in the fulfilment of their duties and activities in terms of Section 13 of the Police Act, Act 19 of 1990. Most police reservists are loyal to prevention of crime and maintenance of law and order, in exception of a few who joined, however are involved in criminal activities. We encourage them to remain committed to service delivery and in the same vein encourage all law abiding citizens who meet the requirements to join,” said Shikwambi.

One such NamPol reservist, Bank Windhoek employee Bonifacius Chaunelesethle on 29 July 2021 caught a scammer red-handed on the way to one of the banks’ ATMs in Windhoek.

In a media statement by the bank, Chaunelesethle said that a middle-aged man was on his way to withdraw an EasyWallet at 01h00, outside of curfew hours.

“I noticed something suspicious right away. I asked the man to explain the urgency for the withdrawal of the money. The man replied that his landlord needed the funds immediately. With his permission, we took his phone and asked him to provide the name of the person that sent him the money, which he could not do, it was suspicious. I asked the officers to keep him in custody until I could contact the sender. Over the years we noticed that scammers usually withdrew customers’ money during early morning hours while they are asleep,” he said.

He added that the client confirmed receiving a phone call from a man the day before, claiming to be a Bank Windhoek employee and requesting the client’s bank account details in order to fraudulently withdraw cash.
