Ruben Makaranga School Staffroom Severely Damaged by Heavy Rain

Rundu:Heavy rain in the Sauyemwa informal settlement on Wednesday caused significant damage to the staffroom at Ruben Makaranga Combined School, a facility utilized by approximately 81 teachers.According to NAMPA, the Head of the Department of Commerce and Prevocational subjects, Paul Malembo, reported that the incident occurred around 01h00. The rainwater damaged school documents and flooded the staffroom, with learners seen using brooms to remove water and some teachers working under trees due to the disrupted conditions.Malembo expressed concerns over the impact on both teachers and students, especially with the upcoming end-of-year examinations. He highlighted the danger posed by exposed electrical cables, which could become more hazardous if further rain occurs.The school is appealing for assistance from the Sauyemwa community, businesses, former students, and others to help with necessary repairs. Malembo noted the urgency of addressing the damage to ensure the school can function effectively duri ng the rainy season and exam period.Rundu Circuit Education Inspector Regina Haingura confirmed that the Kavango East Regional Directorate of Education is aware of the situation. She visited the school and instructed the principal to prepare a report for the directorate. While repairs to the roof are planned, they are not expected to commence immediately, as procedural steps with the Ministry of Works and Transport could take up to a month.Haingura advised the school to secure important items and documents as the rainy season continues. The school currently serves over 2,000 learners.
