The Southern African Development Community (SADC) has announced the launch of the 2022 SADC Media Awards competition through the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (MICT).

The National Adjudication Committee must receive all submissions in the fields of print journalism, radio journalism, television journalism and photojournalism by 28 February 2022.

According to a media statement by MICT on Tuesday, the SADC Secretariat has been coordinating the media awards since 1996 in order to encourage the media in the region to play a leading role in disseminating information about SADC in order to support the process of regional cooperation and integration.

“The SADC vision is one of a shared future within a regional community that will ensure economic well-being, an improvement in living standards and quality of life, freedom and social justice, peace and security for the peoples of southern Africa. This shared vision is founded on shared values and principles, as well as historical and cultural affinities among southern African peoples,” it said.

It stated that entries must have been published/broadcast between January and December of the year preceding the awards (2021) by a registered and/or authorised media house or agency, or carried on the website of a registered and/or authorised media house or agency in any of the SADC Member States.

The themes of the entries to be submitted for the competition must be on issues and activities promoting regional integration in the SADC region, such as infrastructure, economy, water, culture, sports and agriculture, and all works entered should be in one of the SADC working languages; English, Portuguese, French and any national indigenous language of the SADC region. A transcript in one of the three stated languages should be submitted.
