Oshakati: Minister of Urban and Rural Development, Sankwasa James Sankwasa, has praised the Oshakati Totem Expo as a key platform for strengthening cultural identity while driving local economic growth. Speaking on his behalf at a fundraising gala dinner ahead of the 13th edition of the Oshakati Totem Expo 2026 on Saturday night, his deputy Evelyn !Nawases-Taeyele said the event has evolved into more than a cultural gathering, describing it as a vehicle for national development and social cohesion.According to Namibia Press Agency, the Oshakati Totem Expo has distinguished itself over the years as a unique platform where culture, tradition, innovation, and local economic development thrive. Sankwasa highlighted that embracing cultural identity and national pride strategically positions the community to champion development at all levels.Sankwasa emphasized that cultural initiatives such as the expo are critical at a time when societies are grappling with questions of identity and values. He stated that ev ents like the Oshakati Totem Expo remind society that culture is the foundation of humanity and well-being, serving as a guide and source of dignity. He stressed the importance of bringing the wisdom of the past into current times and for future generations.He added that the expo plays a vital role in uniting communities and passing knowledge to younger generations. Beyond its cultural significance, Sankwasa highlighted the expo's economic potential, noting that it stimulates local business activity and positions Oshakati as an eco-cultural tourism destination attractive to investors.Sankwasa described the Oshakati Totem Expo as a bold step by the Oshakati local authority in spearheading the town's development and enhancing its corporate identity. This year's expo is scheduled from 29 May to 06 June 2026.
