Windhoek: Minister of Urban and Rural Development, James Sankwasa, has urged regional councillors to closely monitor projects implemented in their constituencies to ensure that work progresses as planned and is executed properly. Sankwasa made the call on Thursday during the handover of 24 completed Mass Housing Development Programme houses at Otuzemba Extension 2 in Opuwo.

According to Namibia Press Agency, he emphasized that councillors are strategically positioned to identify challenges affecting government projects in their areas and should report such concerns to the relevant authorities. "Regional councillors must have a say on the projects that are ongoing in their constituencies," Sankwasa stated. He highlighted the importance of monitoring development projects in sectors such as agriculture, education, health, and road construction at the constituency level to ensure they contribute meaningfully to rural development.

Sankwasa encouraged councillors to visit project sites, assess progress, and raise concerns where projects are delayed or not being implemented according to required standards. He stressed that public officials are appointed or elected to serve citizens and should therefore be held accountable for the delivery of services and development projects.

Opuwo Mayor Kasipo Kakondo welcomed the minister's engagement with local authorities, affirming the town council's commitment to advancing development in Opuwo. "Your presence here today demonstrates the government's commitment to ensuring that no Namibians are left behind," Kakondo said. He assured that the council and its councillors would continue working to improve the town and uphold the dignity of its residents.

Kakondo described the housing handover as an important milestone in addressing the housing needs of Opuwo residents and restoring dignity to beneficiaries. He urged the beneficiaries to take care of their new homes, noting that a house provides more than shelter, offering security and a foundation for a better future. Kakondo expressed appreciation to the National Housing Enterprise, contractors, and other stakeholders involved in completing the project.
