The Namibian Police Force in the Erongo Region on Thursday arrested the 35-year-old G4S security guard who allegedly ran away with N. dollars 300 000 meant for a Bank Windhoek Automated Teller Machine last Friday.

According to a police report issued on Thursday by NamPol’s Erongo Community Policing Commander, Inspector Ileni Shapumba, the suspect was arrested as a result of a tip off by members of the community.

He was arrested at a shack in the DRC informal settlement at Swakopmund at around 06h00 on Thursday morning.

“The accused was found in the company of friends; two females and two male persons at a residence of his friend, where they are believed to have spent the night.

Following a tip-off from a member of our community, a team of policemen then acted promptly and upon arrival at the venue, the suspect who was drinking alcohol, attempted to run away but was apprehended and detained,” Shapumba added.

An amount of N.dollars 12 800 was found in a plastic bag on his body. No other cash was recovered.

The suspect was charged and is expected to appear in the Swakopmund Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

He allegedly took off with the box of cash while his colleagues, who left him in the cash-in-transit vehicle, were loading money in another ATM machine at Swakopmund’s Spar Ocean View.

According to the police, when the security guards returned to the car in order to proceed to Arandis, they did not find the suspect.

“We applaud the public for the continued support to the police in crime combating. Thus, we urge them to continue. We also congratulate both police officers and members of the public for a job well done in apprehending and arresting the suspect,” Shapumba added.

Police investigations continue.
