Sibbinda: Sikosinyana Senior Secondary School, located in the Sibbinda Constituency of the Zambezi Region, will host its annual inter-school sports tournament this weekend. The event features popular sports codes like football, netball, and volleyball, with 21 school teams from across the region to compete in the junior and secondary categories.According to Namibia Press Agency, confirmed regional powerhouses include Sesheke, Kizito, Mafwila, Mayuni, and Sangwali senior secondary schools. Speaking to Nampa on Thursday, host school principal Harris Tuombale said several cultural and extracurricular activities will highlight the event. He said the games will kick off on Friday, ahead of the official opening ceremony on Saturday. Dignitaries, including former school patrons and the current constituency councillor, Matengo Rector Nkando, are expected to attend.Tuombale emphasised that the tournament fosters unity and discipline, helping learners succeed in both sports and academics. "Tournaments like these ar e important because they promote holistic development and combine physical health with academic excellence. They teach teamwork, respect, and resilience, allowing learners from different backgrounds to bond through healthy competition," Tuombale stated. He added that sports keep youth active, focused, and occupied, reducing negative behaviours on school grounds and in their home communities.Various corporate entities have sponsored the yearly tournament to date, previously driven by former patron and former Deputy Minister of Environment and Tourism, Heather Sibungo. The tournament last year received a combined sponsorship of N$ 90,000 from Sanlam Namibia, Letshego Namibia, the Namibian College of Open Learning (NAMCOL), Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST), the Environmental Investment Fund (EIF), and Triumphant College. In the previous edition, Sangwali Senior Secondary were crowned champions in the senior category for both netball and football. In the junior category, Makanga clinched the football title, while Sangwali took home the netball prize. Meanwhile, Tuombale expressed disappointment over the lack of sponsorship this year, saying only Letshego Namibia and Kuomboka Investments have pledged sponsorship deals for the event. To close the financial gap, most participating teams paid a non-refundable registration fee of N$1000.
