Sanlam Namibia has awarded bursaries to six Namibian students to pursue their studies at local universities.

The bursaries were awarded in accordance with Sanlam’s corporate social responsibility programme, which focuses on education.

The recipients are Delila Katanga, Liyali Anthens, Daliza Haosemab and Esline Gaoses from the Namibia University of Science and Technology, and Urias Ngodji and Victoria Amunyela from the University of Namibia.

Evans Simataa, Sanlam General Manager for Brand and People, made the announcement on Wednesday, stating that as part of its commitment to the education of the Namibian child, Sanlam continues to invest in capacity building and skills development within the communities in which it operates.

He stated that the chosen students all demonstrated exceptional academic performance and dedication to their education in their various fields of study, ranging from accounting to informatics.

“This year, Sanlam received over 1 000 applications for its highly competitive bursary programme from students across the country. The bursary programme is merit-based with strict selection criteria, and students were named as successful Sanlam 2022 bursary recipients after a lengthy search process and interviews with shortlisted candidates,” he said.

The Sanlam bursary scheme aims to provide financial assistance to Namibian students studying at Namibian institutions of higher learning, while also addressing the country’s skills shortage, with a particular emphasis on commercial fields.

“We believe that developing one’s skills through additional education and training benefits the individual,” he explained.

Simataa went on to say that despite the numerous interruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the students performed admirably in their studies.

This, he stated, was a clear demonstration of their commitment and dedication to their studies.

“With this bursary award, these students can now concentrate on their studies without worrying about how they will pay for their tuition. The Sanlam Bursary Scheme is supplemented by an internship programme designed to expose students to real-world work situations and experience,” Simataa added.
