Windhoek: The Swapo Party Youth League (SPYL) has welcomed the progress made by President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah's administration towards reviving Namibia's national airline and reinvigorating the creative industry.
According to Namibia Press Agency, SPYL secretary Ephraim Nekongo stated in a recent announcement that the handover of licenses by the Transport Commission to Works and Transport Minister Veikko Nekundi and the Namibia Air Committee marks a significant step in restoring the country's national carrier. Nekongo emphasized that the revival of the airline is not merely an economic endeavor but a strategic national asset that can enhance connectivity, trade, and tourism within Namibia.
The liquidation of Air Namibia in 2021 left the country without a national flag carrier, following years of financial difficulties and insurmountable debt. Nekongo highlighted that the current advancements, including the acquisition of aircraft and the anticipated first flight in December, indicate a learning curve from past missteps and a movement towards establishing a more sustainable aviation sector. The new airline is set to be a key aspect of the Swapo Party's 2025-2030 election manifesto.
Nekongo also pointed out that the progress signifies the government's commitment to fulfilling its electoral promises. He cautioned, however, that the creation of a national airline involves careful planning, adherence to regulatory standards, and financial readiness. Despite these challenges, he described the progress as commendable.
In addition to the airline, SPYL lauded the government's support for the creative industry, particularly through the revival of the Namibia Annual Music Awards (NAMAs). After a six-year hiatus, the Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture has allocated N$10 million for the 2027 NAMAs. Nekongo noted this initiative as an acknowledgment of the creative sector's role in Namibia's economic and developmental plans.
He further stressed the importance of annual arts and creative industry awards, transparent selection processes, and collaborations with the private sector to recognize and empower creative talents within the nation.
