Asaba: The Director-General of the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), Dr. Ifeanyi Okeke, has raised concerns about the dangers posed by substandard products to the lives of citizens and the economic development of the country. Dr. Okeke made these remarks during a stakeholders' sensitisation forum held in Asaba.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the sensitisation programme, titled 'Promoting Quality Standards through Self-Regulation and Observation of Ethics,' highlighted the importance of standard and quality products. Represented by Mrs. Ethan Talatu, Director of Corporate Affairs at SON, Dr. Okeke emphasized that quality products are essential for safety, environmental health, increased exports, and foreign exchange earnings. He stressed that these factors are crucial for economic growth and for enhancing the global competitiveness of locally made products.
Dr. Okeke noted that the initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu's administration's agenda to revitalize the nation's economy. He revealed that SON has achieved some progress through ongoing sensitisation programs, particularly in fostering collaboration with stakeholders. He urged all parties to ensure only certified quality products are available for sale and consumption nationwide.
The SON Director-General called on stakeholders to back the organisation's efforts across different sectors. He advocated for the establishment and growth of market associations and the building of memberships to boost self-regulation and adherence to ethical standards. This, he argued, would not only promote business growth but also enhance the nation's economy.
Dr. Okeke reassured Nigerians of SON's commitment to supporting the country's pursuit of global competitiveness, trade facilitation, and industrial growth. He stated that the organisation is concentrating on promoting standards through self-regulation and ethical observation, with an emphasis on quality assurance involving both public and private sector participation. The nationwide sensitisation workshops aim to bolster stakeholder collaboration.
