Rehoboth: The Tobie Van Wyk Race Day, organised by the Naris Turf Club, is set to occur at the Rehoboth turf in the Hardap Region this Saturday. The event aims to formally celebrate the contributions of the legendary horse racing figure Tobie Van Wyk, who has significantly impacted the sport in Hardap and Namibia.According to Namibia Press Agency, the competition organiser, Eamon Freygang, mentioned on Thursday that this prestigious event was not initially listed on the Namibia Horse Racing Association (NHRA) calendar for this year. However, the Naris Turf Club decided to host it as a gesture of appreciation for both Van Wyk and the jockeys. Freygang noted, "We are killing two birds with one stone. We are paying respect to 'Tobie' and at the same time honoring our riders, who are important stakeholders in our sport."He further stated that jockeys require support, especially during the festive season, as they have families to support. The event offers a prize pool of N.dollars 85 000 distributed across 14 races. Special emphasis will be placed on races 13 and 14, which are the main events for Nambred and Thoroughbred horses, respectively.The Nambred main race, Race 13 (D-Division), will feature competitors such as Leopard Lady, Miss Lollipop, Katiti Komambo, Boma, Destiny, She's A Lady, Soldier Boy, and Bokkie. Soldier Boy recently showcased impressive performance at the MTC Summer Cup in Okahandja, while Boma, Destiny, and Leopard Lady are well-known names in Nambred racing.The Thoroughbred main race (A-Division 2000m) will include prominent names like Woodland Ridge, Sitting Bull, Action Time, Whisper, Power Surge, Wondering Star, and Bold Boundaries. Another notable race will be the Import D-Division (1400m) category, where MTC champion Pee Jay will compete against Torix Night, Wylie Riley, Varistocracy, and Miraculous Man. Additionally, Crystal Maiden, Del Boy, Starlito, Mr Aminuis, Time Master, World in Unison, and Desert Fox will race in the 1,600m of Import graduation horses, alongside Muskiet, Spoo rsny, Surprise, Miss Chicca's, and Margrethe.The first race is scheduled to start at 09h00. Admission fees are N.dollars 50 for adults and N.dollars 20 for children. The event will also feature live DJ performances and commentary.
