Tsumeb: The Tsumeb Municipality is preparing to increase water tariffs in July 2025 to cover the operational costs of its newly constructed water treatment plant, valued at N.dollars 36 million. The municipality's engineer, Manuel Pedro, stated in an interview that consultations are underway with the Ministry of Rural and Urban Development concerning this matter.According to Namibia Press Agency, Pedro mentioned that currently, water is priced at approximately N.dollars 8.40 per litre, and there are plans to increase this amount in July 2025. He explained that the new plant will enhance water quality for Tsumeb residents by addressing long-standing issues such as calcium build-up in appliances. The facility is designed to treat underground water to reduce its hardness and eliminate clostridium.The municipality intends to engage the community through public consultations before finalizing the new tariff. Stella Nangolo-Imalwa, the municipality's spokesperson, confirmed that the revised tariffs will also co ver ongoing maintenance expenses related to the plant. She noted that the new tariff will be determined through council meetings.The project, which began in July and was carried out by Nafasi JV Nexus, is anticipated to solve the persistent water challenges faced by Tsumeb residents.
