New york: Despite its accomplishments over the last 80 years, the United Nations is currently confronting significant challenges that threaten its future authority.

According to Namibia Press Agency, the UN has made substantial progress in establishing a multilateral international order based on the UN Charter, promoting sustainable development, and advancing global climate action. It has also been an advocate for gender equality, child welfare, and human rights while addressing humanitarian crises.

However, with the world undergoing profound changes, the question arises: how can the UN continue to serve effectively? Strengthening multilateralism and ensuring equal global governance for all countries are essential. The U.S.-led West has traditionally shaped global trade and security rules, but the rising influence of BRICS and Global South countries poses new challenges. The West's reluctance to accept its declining influence complicates the UN's role as a multilateral platform.

Current global issues such as climate change, nuclear disarmament, and AI governance demand multilateralism and solidarity. The structural challenges within the UN, especially the underrepresentation of developing countries, also need addressing. In response, China has introduced the Global Governance Initiative (GGI), which aligns with the UN Charter and aims to make global governance more equitable and inclusive.

The GGI emphasizes sovereign equality, adherence to international law, multilateralism, a people-centered approach, and real action. These principles offer a framework for addressing interconnected global challenges, from conflicts to climate emergencies. During his address to the General Assembly, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres highlighted the critical role of multilateralism, stating that isolation is ineffective in tackling global threats.

Revitalizing multilateral cooperation is crucial for maintaining the UN's central role, and initiatives like China's GGI can provide a practical guide for future efforts.
