Windhoek: The University of Namibia (UNAM) and Huawei Namibia have joined forces through a memorandum of understanding to enhance digital skills development, research, and innovation. The collaboration aims to bridge the gap between academia and industry, focusing on the integration of advanced technologies.According to Namibia Press Agency, UNAM Vice Chancellor Prof Kenneth Matengu emphasized that the partnership aligns with the university's Integrated Strategic Business Plan. This plan highlights the importance of technological investment and transforming campuses into digital learning spaces. A significant aspect of the agreement is the creation of an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Laboratory at UNAM, designed to facilitate hands-on learning and innovative research in emerging technologies.Matengu highlighted the growing relevance of AI across various fields, such as health, agriculture, and public administration, and UNAM's commitment to incorporating AI competencies into its academic offerings. Huawei board director Jason Xu echoed these sentiments, underscoring the partnership's goal to equip Namibia with the skills and knowledge necessary to thrive in a technology-driven global economy.Xu noted that the partnership would extend to training programs in AI, data science, cloud computing, and other digital transformations. It will also include initiatives such as student internships, staff exchanges, and industry-oriented certification programs.Matengu expressed that the collaboration is anticipated to enhance graduate employability, align academic learning with industry requirements, and foster entrepreneurship. He also called for an update to Namibia's national occupational classification framework, last revised in 1996, to accommodate emerging technology professions and improve graduate absorption into the workforce.Both UNAM and Huawei Namibia are optimistic that their partnership will contribute significantly to developing a knowledge-based economy, preparing Namibian youth for the digital age's opportunities.
