Windhoek: The University of Namibia (UNAM) is conducting a two-day training session focused on immediate newborn care and both basic and advanced neonatal resuscitation in the Hardap Region. This initiative is taking place at the request of the Hardap Regional Health Directorate and aims to equip health professionals, particularly midwives and doctors, with essential knowledge and skills for providing quality care to newborns, especially those experiencing breathing difficulties at birth.According to Namibia Press Agency, Helena Nuumbosho, a UNAM lecturer and coordinator of the Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing Science, Advanced Midwifery, and Neonatal Nursing Care specialization, emphasized the training's goal as enhancing the capabilities of skilled birth attendants. Nuumbosho highlighted Namibia's ongoing struggle with neonatal mortality, with the current rate at 24.1 deaths per 1,000 live births.Nuumbosho further explained the significance of updating health workers' knowledge and skills, considering th e constant emergence of new research and evidence-based practices. She noted that the training is crucial for aligning with the latest international and national standards and guidelines in neonatal care.This is the first time UNAM has been invited by the Hardap Region to conduct such comprehensive training, which expands on previous programs held in the ||Kharas Region. Earlier training sessions primarily focused on immediate newborn care, lacking the depth in advanced neonatal resuscitation offered in the current program. By broadening the scope, the training aims to strengthen the competencies of midwives and doctors, ensuring that newborns receive timely and quality care during critical post-birth moments.
